Utah Women's Basketball To Host Power of Pink Walk Friday

The Utah Women's Basketball team is hosting it's annual "Pink Walk" Friday before the Power of Pink game against Oregon at 5 p.m.

The "Pink Walk" supports Breast Cancer Awareness and begins at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and finishes at the Huntsman Center prior to the Utes game.  The event is free and participants will get free Power of Pink give-a-way items, pre-game snacks and a chalk talk with a coach.

After the walk, make your way to the Huntsman Center for the Utes game against Oregon.  At the game, a lucky student will receive a $300 gift card to the Campus Bookstore and a runner-up will receive a $100 food voucher from Campus Dining.  To enter, there will be a drawing box located at Door 1 before the game and contestants will be drawn during the first half.

All students get in free with their U-Card and can bring a non-student guest. Don't forget to wear Pink. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Utah to Face Colorado and Honor Rick Majerus Saturday

Utah will honor former coach Rick Majerus, who recently passed away due to heart failure, at the Colorado game on Saturday, February 2nd at 12:30 p.m.

There will be a halftime tribute that will feature a video and retirement of Majerus' famous sweater into the rafters at the Huntsman Center.

The first 100 students in attendance will get a free hot dog or popcorn, and a drink. The doors to the Huntsman Center will open at 11 a.m.

Utes Return Home To Face Cal Thursday in Power of Pink Game

With a Pac-12 win under their belt, the Utes look to continue the momentum from their 74-65 road win over Washington as they face Cal on Thursday in a Power of Pink match supporting breast cancer awareness at the Huntsman Center at 6:30 p.m.

After a (6-0) start to the season, Cal has lost seven out of their last 11 games. Athletic guard Allen Crabbe leads the team with nearly 20 points per game and 5.5 rebounds.

When he plays well, Cal usually wins but he's been struggling over the past two weeks. Crabbe is averaging just 12.3 points per game over their last three games. He had just nine points in their home loss to Washington on (3-12) shooting.  For Utah, shutting down the future NBA Draft pick and Pac-12 leading scorer will be crucial.

For the Utes, freshman guard Brandon Taylor had a breakout game in the win over Washington with 19 points and six assists off the bench. Coach Krystkowiak isn't making any promises, but expect him to have a much larger role as the season goes on.

"I think in the opportunities he has had in four or five games he has played really well. He has a lot of savvy and moxie and is as good of a shooter as we have on our team," said Krystkowiak in his press conference Monday. "He plays with a lot of confidence and that’s what we needed. Offensively he gave us a big boost in that game. But as we always say, no one should ever be satisfied and expect ‘big-time’ minutes."

The MUSS needs to #PackTheHuntsman Center and be loud like we were against UCLA and USC to give the Utes the home court advantage needed to win. Tipoff will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Utah Women's Basketball Student Engagement Program

Utah Women's Basketball is starting a great student engagement program, giving away hundreds of dollars in campus related prizes for students who attend games starting Friday with the game against Arizona. The prizes will include:

• Friday, January 18th vs. Arizona at 7 p.m.
• Winning student will receive a $200 food voucher from campus dining
• Runner-up will receive a $100 food voucher from campus dining 
• Friday, February 8th vs. Oregon at 7 p.m.
• Winning students will receive a $300 gift card for any use at the University of Utah Campus Store
• Runner-Up will receive a $100 food voucher from campus dining
• Friday, February 22nd vs. Washington at 7 p.m.
• Winning Student will receive one (1) month complimentary rent in the University of Utah Campus Housing
• Runner-Up will receive a $100 food voucher from campus dining

To sign up for the contest, a drawing box will be located at Door 1 during the three games.  Winners will be drawn and announced during the first half and must be present to win.  Also, one hour before each Women's Basketball game, students can get a free hot dog and drink outside the arena. 

The MUSS Packs The Huntsman Center as Utes Nearly Upset UCLA

The Utes fell in another heartbreak loss to one of the Pac12's best teams, losing 57-53 to UCLA. Despite the loss, The MUSS packed the Huntsman Center and provided the Utes a boost. With a student attendance just under one thousand at the game, it was the largest MUSS crowd in recent years. Here is what the Utes and fans had to say about crowd:

“It was really awesome and cool. Seeing that section up there was huge. Obviously, because of the weather it was a little bit slow for everybody to get here. But there was a little heartbeat over there in the corner of the arena. They were there and we need that. It is a big part of college athletics to have that kind of pulse. I have always said that the student section is kind of the heartbeat of the arena and people are feeding off them. I hope we can continue to build on that and that some of those people will come back and give us a shot on Saturday.” - Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

“They are on our side and we liked having them. In the last five minutes of the game, we went on that stretch where we started scoring and Loveridge got the dunk, you could hear them. The excitement in the gym just made us excited and it made us play a little harder.” - Senior Cedric Martin

Utah Hosts UCLA Thursday in Blackout and Pac-12 Home Opener

The Utes were a couple inches away from beating the conferences two best teams on the road, losing to (13-2) Arizona State in overtime and No. 3 (14-0) Arizona. They had shots in the final seconds to win each game that didn't fall, but the Utes sent a strong message to the Pac-12 that they can beat anyone.

Now the Utes face another tough challenge, but they do it in front of a packed Huntsman Center where they are (7-2. The Runnin' Utes open with star studded UCLA and expect a raucous home crowd in their blackout Thursday, January 10th.

UCLA is off to a (12-3) start, but this will be their first true road game of the season and it will be a tough environment.  The Bruins struggled on the road last season, going (4-7) but they are much improved this season with some of the nations top recruits and future NBA lottery picks.

Shabazz Muhammad leads UCLA with 19.6 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game.  He was rated the  No. 1 recruit in the country coming out of high school and is projected by many to be a Top 5 pick in next years NBA Draft.  Another freshman, Jordan Adams, has also made a strong impact with 16.6 points per game. 

For the Utes, they are also led by a talented freshman in Jordan Loveridge. Loveridge averages 13 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game so far this season.  He is coming off a 17 point performance in Utah's close loss at No. 3 Arizona.  

The MUSS is hosting a pregame event at the Alumni House at 6 p.m.  Come get pumped for the game with free food and giveaways before the 7:30 tipoff against the Bruins.  All students get in free with their student ID and can bring up to four non-student guest for free.  Wear BLACK, be loud and help the Runnin' Utes pull off the upset.

Free Basketball MUSS Bus to Las Vegas For Best Attendance Students

The MUSS and Utah Athletics has exciting news for the Pac-12 Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand, starting on March 13th.

Utah Athletics will provide a MUSS Bus to travel to Las Vegas, hotel arrangements and tickets to the Pac-12 Tournament completely free to the students that attend the most Utah Basketball games.

The Top 25 students with the highest attendance at Utah Basketball games for the entire 2012-2013 season will each have the option to add a guest.  If they can't go, or choose not to add a guest, the opportunity will move to students below them in attendance.  There will be a total of 50 students going on the trip.

More details will be coming soon but make sure you get to as many Utah Basketball games as you can for the greatest chance of participating in the first ever Basketball MUSS Bus.  There are 10 home games left before the students will be selected.  Next will be Tuesday, December 18th against SMU at 7 p.m.

Utes Nearly Take Down BYU in Provo, Lose 61-58

Utah nearly took down BYU in Provo, missing a three point shot to send the game to overtime after leading for 37 minutes. After multiple years of being dominated by BYU, the Utes competed to the final minute and outplayed BYU for most of the game in a thriller.

For the second straight game, Utah's tough defense was dominant. Utah held BYU to 31.1 percent shooting from the field. Cedric Martin held BYU's leading scorer Tyler Haws to 2-10 shooting and Brandon Davies was held to 11 points.

Jordan Loveridge led the Utes in scoring with 14 points on 5-11 shooting, with 12 of his 14 points coming in the second half. Glen Dean had 10 points and Jason Washburn had 9 off the bench.

 Up next, Utah hosts SMU at home on Tuesday, December 18th at 7 p.m. After losing 62-55 on the road at SMU in late November, Utah will be looking to get revenge on the (8-1) Mustangs.

Utes Win Big Over Boise State, 76-55

Utah (6-2) picked up arguably their biggest win in years, beating a Boise State (6-2) team that came into the Huntsman Center with a win over Creighton and only one close loss to Michigan State.  The Broncos came into the game ranked No. 52 in the RPI and received Top 25 votes in the USA Today and AP Polls.

Jarred DuBois led the team with 18 points and Jason Washburn added 11 off the bench.  Glen Dean had a strong performance with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists.  Freshman Jordan Loveridge was in double figures with 11 points while also grabbing 5 rebounds.

Most importantly, Utah played well as a team hitting 67.5 percent of their shots and 81.3 percent from the free throw line, while playing strong defense.  In a game where Utah honored Rick Majerus, they played in a way that would have made the coach proud.

This statement win should give Utah momentum as they prepare to face BYU Saturday in Provo.  Utah hasn't beaten BYU since 2009, but they bring a much stronger team under coach Larry Krystkowiak.  This team is off to their best start since 2003-2004, the final year that Coach Majerus was on The Hill.

Runnin' Utes To Honor Majerus & Face Boise State

The (5-2) Runnin' Utes will play their biggest game yet this season as they face (6-1) Boise State Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.

Arrive early as the school will mourn the loss of former Utah Basketball Coach Rick Majerus with a pregame video tribute and moment of silence.  The MUSS will hang a banner honoring Majerus with the 2003-2004 Basketball MUSS logo.  Later in the season, the famous Majerus sweater will be retired in the rafters.

Utah needs just one more win to match their win total from last year.  With a much improved team, Jarred DuBois leads with 15.7 PPG and freshman Jordan Loveridge has 12.3 PPG and 8.6 RPG on the season.

Boise State is off to a great start this season, including a 13 point win at No. 11 Creighton.  Their only loss came on the road at Michigan State, losing by just four points.  The Broncos are led by sophomore guard Derrick Marks who is averaging 18.7 PPG  and Anthony Drmic with 15.9 PPG and 5.6 RPB.

All University of Utah students get in free with their U-Card and can bring up to four non-student guests to each game.  Students can get a free Basketball MUSS shirt for the season on the concourse until 5 minutes before tipoff at 6:25 p.m.

Utah Gymnastics is home to one of the best crowds in the nation and I want you to be a part of it!  This season we will be hosting some of the top teams in the country.  Don't miss your chance to see it live.  MUSS registration is now open for just $15.  As a member of the MUSS you receive a gymnastics MUSS t-shirt and lower bowl seating in the student section.  T-shirt pick up will begin this Friday, November 30 at the Dumke Gymnastics Training Center from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.  During this time you will get your first chance to see the 2013 Red Rocks in action at our practice meet.  I encourage you to come check out the training facility and mingle with the team.

Runnin' Utes Unable to Hold on to Lead, Lose 74-71

Despite hundreds of students from The MUSS in attendance, the Utes (1-1) watched a 13 point second half lead slip away as they fell to (3-0) Sacramento State 74-71 after missing a three pointer to send the game to overtime.

Glen Dean led the Utes with 16 points on 5-10 shooting, including 4-9 from the three.  Jarred DuBois added 13 points and four rebounds.  Renan Lenz and Dallin Bachynski played well coming off the bench, scoring a combined 19 points and grabbing a combined 10 rebounds.

"I think we played really well for three-fourths of the game, but we need to learn how to close," Glen Dean said after the game.  "Last year we had to learn how to lose and just try to be in every game. This year we need to learn how to win. With some upper-classmen, we need to pick up some of our leadership and close out games when they are close like that."

#1 - The MUSS can contribute to a Utah win on Saturday night! We've seen multiple times this season what can happen to opposing teams when they come into Rice-Eccles Stadium. The MUSS can cause false starts, fumbles, confusion to the opposing QB, etc. However, this can only happen if you are at the game and are LOUD! It will be a long nine months until there is another home football game so don't miss this one. Besides, what else would you be doing on a Saturday night?

The MUSS tailgate starts at 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. Then head to your seats and be there early to honor our amazing seniors. Kick-off at 8 p.m.

Utah Men's & Women's Basketball Hosts Double Header Friday

The undefeated Utah Men's & Women's Basketball teams are hosting a basketball double header Friday at the Huntsman Center.

Starting at 3:30 p.m, pick up your free Basketball MUSS t-shirt and get free hot dogs and drinks before the Women's Basketball game that starts at 4:30 p.m.  After the game is over, the Men's team will tip off against Sacramento State at 7 p.m.  All University of Utah students get in free with their U-Card and can bring up to four non-student guests to each game.

The Runnin' Utes opened the season with an impressive 104-47 rout of Divison III opponent Willamett.  It gets much tougher Friday as they face Sacramento State, a Division I opponent that is off to a (2-0) start.  It isn't Pac-12 competition, but it should be a nice early test for the improved Runnin' Utes.

The Women's team is off to a (2-0) start, coming off an 18 point win over Southern Utah University.  They also face their toughest challenge of the season, hosting Big 10 opponent (2-0) Michigan.  The Utes lost in Ann Arbor last season 55-50 and will be looking to avenge their loss in front of the home crowd.

Arrive early, wear your free Basketball MUSS Shirt and stand on the front rows of the MUSS to help give Utah a great home court advantage.

Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week 12

The Pac-12 remains strong with six of 12 teams ranked in the Top 25. Leading the way is Oregon, who just moved up to No. 2 in the BCS Standings with Alabama's loss to Texas A&M.  Look for the Pac-12 to get two teams into BCS again with Oregon in the National Championship Game and another playing in the Rose Bowl.

Runnin' Utes Open Regular Season With 104-47 Rout Over Willamette

Tonight Utah did something that hasn't been done since 1995.

The last time a Utah Basketball team scored 100 points, Rick Majerus was coaching with a roster of NBA talent, including Andre Miller, Keith Van Horn and Michael Doleac. That team would eventually make it to the Sweet 16; two years before their run to the NCAA National Championship Game.

Utah defeated Willamette in their regular season opener 104-47, a 57 point victory in front of over 6,000 fans at the Huntsman Center.  It was the program's largest margin of victory in 12 years and most points scored in 17 years.
