Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week 9

As the regular season begins to enter its final stretch, many Pac-12 teams are in contention to play in BCS Bowls.  Despite dominating Arizona State, Oregon fell to No. 4 in the BCS Standings with strong performances by Kansas State and Florida. With No. 9 USC and No. 7 Oregon State left on their schedule, the Ducks should have plenty of chances to prove to voters that they may be the best team in the country.  The undefeated Ducks are No. 1 in our Pac-12 Power Rankings as well.  Here are the rest of the rankings:

2012- 2013 Utah Basketball Preview

New Faces, New Expectations

This Wednesday, October 24th the University of Utah basketball team will kick off their 2012-2013 season with “Runnin’ Utes Night” at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.  This will be a scrimmage free to fans and will start at 7 p.m.  For the casual Utah basketball fan, this scrimmage can serve as an opportunity to get to know the names and faces of almost an entirely new team.
Despite the 6-25 record from last season, these new faces provide promise and hope for the upcoming year.  Over the past year, the Runnin’ Utes have gotten big men, playmakers, and guys who they hope can provide consistent outside shooting.  These are all areas where the Utes struggled last season.  Look everywhere from transfers, to JUCOS, to incoming freshman to all make an immediate impact on this year's squad.
Let us not forget the big man, Jason Washburn, whose game seemed grow as the season prolonged last year, as he ended up being the Utes leading scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker.  The senior had little to no help in the post last season, being the only player on the team over 6’7.  However, this year will be different with help from Renan Lenz, a 6’9 forward and Brazilian native, who will give assistance to Washburn at the center position and provide size when he plays the power forward spot.
Freshman, Jordan Loveridge, who is possibly the most anticipated player for the upcoming season, was an ESPN Top 100 recruit and is the program's highest-rated recruit in recent memory.  Many Utah fans hope Loveridge will help restore the program to its old winning ways in his years up on the Hill.  It looks like this year Loveridge will spend a majority of his time at power forward due to the injury and loss of big man David Foster, who re-injured his foot in preseason practices and will have to miss the entire 2012-2013 campaign.
There is certainly no shortage of wing players this year for the Runnin’ Utes. Junior, Aaron Dotson will most likely fill one wing spot to add athleticism, experience, and maturity to the team.  As a freshman at LSU, Dotson started 17 games, then as a sophomore started 21 more before transferring to Utah.  Senior, Jarred DuBois, who transferred to Utah as graduate student from Loyola Marymount University, will mostly likely fill the other wing.  DuBois will help offensively, as he averaged double-digit points in the three full seasons at LMU, and defensively with his aggressive parameter defense.  He may also see time at point guard in some situations.  There are several other players who could see time as a wing, including freshman Justin Seymour, a natural scorer and deep threat, freshman Dakarai Tucker, a long and athletic young talent, and senior Cedric Martin, who started 31 games for the Runnin’ Utes last season and shot 37% from behind the arc.
One of the biggest areas the Utes struggled last season was the lack of a floor general.  The team struggled not having someone who could create for others, set up the offense, or handle the ball without turning it over.  The unquestioned answer to these problems is transfer point guard Glen Dean.  The junior is a transfer from Eastern Washington University where he led the team in scoring and assists both his freshman and sophomore year.  He was named Big Sky freshman of the year, and his sophomore year he averaged 13.3 points and 4.2 assists per game and shot 41% from three-point land while earning a second-team All-Big Sky Conference selection.  Dean looks to be close to being back to full strength after having brain surgery last December to repair a ruptured blood vessel in his brain.  Freshman, Brandon Taylor may also see some time as the point guard.
Expect Coach Larry Krystkowiak to have this team solid fundamentally and playing with tremendous effort.  Despite the poor record last season, the team was very good defensively.  It appears through the first few days of practice, defense has been the main focus yet again.  The Runnin’ Utes will open with an exhibition game Friday, November 2nd at the Huntsman Center at 7 p.m. against Simon Fraser, then will have their first regular season game at the Huntsman Center on Friday, November 9th versus Williamette.  The Utes will continue against a fairly weak non-conference schedule until they start playing the powers of the PAC-12 in early January.
Regardless of the performance of the team on the court, no team in the country can match the Utes performance off the court.  Starting in July, senior Jarred DuBois and others began making and delivering sandwiches to the homeless in Pioneer Park.  With coaches and media unaware, more and more players started going and dropping off sandwiches and it became a tradition for the team every Sunday afternoon.  These actions show the caliber of people these players are.  We should be proud they are representing not only the basketball program, but also the University.

Utes Look to Upset No. 8 Oregon State

Who would have thought that the highest ranked team Utah plays this season is... Oregon State?  The Beavers went (3-9) last season, including a 27-8 loss at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Oregon State has shown what a difference a season can make with an experienced quarterback.  Last year they started quarterback Sean Mannion as a freshman and it has paid off for them.  This season the sophomore quarterback has led the Beavers to wins over Wisconsin, UCLA, Arizona and Washington State.

Mannion had to sit out their BYU win due to having knee surgery. Just a week later, he is expected to start against the Utes and says he's "100 percent."  He's lead this offense into one of the best passing attacks in the country.  Statistically even better than Utah saw against USC.

Utes Look To Keep Bowl Hopes Alive at UCLA

One year ago in Utah's first Pac-12 season, many Ute fans were wondering if Utah would be able to make a bowl game after a (2-3) start to the season.  The team responded well and rallied to win five of their last seven games to reach (7-5) and continue their great postseason record.  One of those five wins last season was a 31-6 win over UCLA.
Today, the Utes are in a similar situation.  After another (2-3) start to the season, many fans are wondering if the Utes will be able to get to six wins with a much improved Pac-12 this season.  A road win over UCLA would be a great start to turning the season around to reach another bowl game.

Initially this game looked like it would be extremely difficult after the Bruins started the season (3-0) and were ranked No. 19 in the country.  Since then they have lost two of their last three, including a 43-17 blowout loss at Cal.  Confidence may be a bit higher for this game among Utah fans than it was a few weeks ago, but it will still be a very challenging road game.

Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week 7

The depth of the Pac-12 really showed this week as Cal crushed UCLA, USC needed four quarters to beat Utah, Stanford needed overtime to get by Arizona and Washington State hung with Oregon State.  By beating up on each other, the Pac-12 doesn't have six teams in the Top 25 like last week, but four teams remain ranked putting itself as one of the best in the conferences in the country.  Here are our Pac-12 power rankings for week 7:

Despite Losing to USC, The MUSS & Utah's Crowd Impressed

The end result of the highly anticipated Utah vs USC game isn't what we were looking for, but Utah fans did a great job showing the national ESPN audience what a great atmosphere we have at Rice-Eccles Stadium and how it is a tough place to play.  Here are some tweets about Utah's atmosphere from around the country from Thursday night's game:

Utes Set For Huge Thursday Night Home Game vs. No. 13 USC

This is the moment everyone has been waiting for.  The home game fans circled on their schedules and have been waiting for since we joined the Pac-12.  No. 13 USC is coming to Rice-Eccles Stadium tomorrow.
The winning picture in our photo contest for front row seats vs USC
Before the season, this game looked to be much larger than it is now, but that doesn't take away from the opportunity to host one of the most storied programs in college football and showcase The MUSS and Rice-Eccles Stadium as one of the toughest places to play in the Pac-12.

WEAR YOUR MUSS SHIRT!

The game this Thursday night is BIG! This is the first time the Trojans will be in Rice-Eccles Stadium since 1917. The Utes are looking to avenge the heartbreaking loss from last year. The MUSS will be featured on a national stage; this is the first game on ESPN in years. When you combine those elements, and then add the fact that both teams are looking to improve their Pac-12 records, it makes this one of the most highly anticipated games of the season.

This is time for The MUSS to shine! At the last home game vs. the Team Down South the atmosphere was electric. The crowd, and especially The MUSS, had a huge impact on the game (and no, not just at the end). We caused eight false starts and made it impossible for their players to hear each other which directly influenced two bad snaps; one of which was run in for a Ute touchdown.

Get your voices ready because Thursday night needs to be even crazier! Keep your energy up the entire game and get LOUD! And remember, wear your MUSS shirt! As mentioned before, this will be the first time a Ute home game is broadcast on ESPN in years. We want The MUSS to be featured at its very best, which means everyone wearing your MUSS T-shirt.  Take a look at the two photos below:

A game where everyone's MUSS shirt is covered up:

vs. a game where everyone is wearing their MUSS shirt:

Which one looks better to you? We realize the first photo was in the middle of a snow storm and we don't expect you to freeze just so you can wear your MUSS shirt but for Thursday night we strongly encourage you to do everything you can in order to show your MUSS shirt to the national audience.

GO UTES!

Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week 6

The Pac-12 continues its dominance this season, with six teams currently ranked in the Top 25 in either the AP or USA Today Polls.  Two other teams, Arizona and Arizona State received votes putting two thirds of the conference on Top 25 Ballots.  Here is how The MUSS ranks the Pac-12:
